Digital technology in educational practices – B
2:25–2:55PM – Presentation 1
Tablet computers and graphic tablets for effective teaching and feedback
Effective communication is one of the challenges in online teaching for disciplines that require constant juggling of specialized symbols and formulas. The instructor needs access to handwriting tools for this reason, in order to teach or provide a student with feedback. This workshop will include a demonstration of how a tablet computer (the iPad) and a graphic tablet (the Wacom Intuos S) are used in teaching. These two pieces of technology, equipped with a stylus that becomes an extension of the hand, are essential teaching aids when combined with commonly used software (Microsoft 365 Suite, Adobe Acrobat Reader, etc.).

Digital scaffolding tools: relevance for online teaching and avenues of exploration for their development, working with practice settings
The scaffolding theory (Bruner, 1983) suggests that a learner develops skills when assisted by a tutor, whose role is to evaluate the student with a view to withdrawing help as he/she gradually masters the skill. Scaffolding can be used in digital learning environments (DLE) in discussion forums, as well as through “tutors” who help the learner perform a task – for example, in working to solve a complex problem (Belland et al., 2017).
Drawing on the results of a research study carried out during the transition to distance education in the midst of the pandemic, we will present the tools suggested as well as students’ perceptions as they highlight the relevance of these devices. We will then discuss various pathways for collaborative development of digital scaffolding tools using the Karuta app, which can be integrated into the DLE using the LTI protocol.
