Digital technology in educational practices – B
10:35–11:05AM – Presentation 1
Evaluations using a cell phone to guide student success
The instructor sought a creative approach to make her evaluation and feedback tasks more user-friendly. She also wanted to give the student – who was pursuing a DEC in Visual arts (510.A0) – “one-stop” access to all relevant documents for her course. Working with the ICT educational consultant, she was able to collect various tools and use their educational potential.
This particular course calls for visual evaluation and feedback of students’ work, and the information is automatically compiled into a grid (a questionnaire linked to a Google Sheets file, which automates data archiving). The student thus receives a visual read of his performance level, through an efficient colour code method. The evaluation form makes reflection easier for the instructor, since the statistical data provide clarification and she can adjust the subject matter taught. This frees up time that is reinvested in one-on-one coaching, so the learning process is ultimately a better guide of students’ success in the course.
Stéphanie Granger, Instructor (Cégep Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu)
Stéphanie Granger is a teacher in the DEC visual arts program at Cégep Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, and in the fashion design techniques program at Collège LaSalle. She has a Master’s degree in visual and media arts, and a graduate-level teaching certificate for higher education from UQAM. Her career path encompasses more than 20 years of varied experiences in teaching visual arts, artistic production and graphic design. Using her expertise in various artistic techniques and software programs, she has built digital technology into her in-class or online teaching methods, which are inspired by the inverted classroom. This year, she has published an entry in Profweb, hosted a visual arts professional development day at Cégep Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, been published in the Saltise conference proceedings and was scheduled to speak at the CICAN conference, the AQPC meeting and Saltise 2020 before they were cancelled.

MASTERA, Formation continue at Cégep de Jonquière – toward universal accessibility
Learner and employee diversity is the reality facing post-secondary institutions today. Inclusive education is a major challenge that calls for a review of practices at all levels: management, administration, pedagogy, communication, information technology and student/employee support. Education can only be inclusive in accessible digital environments. Moreover, the United Nations Organization considers digital accessibility to be a human right (2016). What does being accessible mean in concrete terms? What are the winning conditions for achieving this? What strategies and practices should be adopted, what should be adapted and how can change come about within the organization, so every individual – be it a student or an employee – is encouraged to advance in his/her life plan?
In this workshop, we will present a project underway at MASTERA, Formation continue, at Cégep de Jonquière, on the implementation of inclusive designs and management practices. Topics of discussion will be the action plan, the accessibility policy, training and redesigning the digital environment (e.g., website). This project is a joint effort by the continuing education team and an agency specializing in digital accessibility.

Experiential pedagogy: an experiment using an immersive virtual reality device
Teachers in higher education are under a lot of pressure to offer authentic, engaging instruction that will leave a deep imprint on learners in their academic or professional careers. Simulations for professionalization, on new digital media, present instructors with unique opportunities to build learner engagement.
Digital literacy is a core element of learning to master specific skills in technical training. As part of its architectural techniques program, the Séminaire de Sherbrooke began trials with experiential pedagogy, intended to engage learners, in the fall of 2019.
Dominic Carmichael’s presentation shows the scope and limits of experiential learning using an immersive virtual reality device when teaching architectural techniques.
